insertEFFECT haben eine neue Version ihres eBooks Mobile Design & Usability für Apps veröffentlicht.

Ihm ihm werden die iOS und Android UI Guidelines vorgestellt, kurz Nielsen’s Usability Prinzipien angerissen und eine App beispielhaft für beide Plattformen entwickelt.

We can’t have advances in Technology any longer unless Design is integrated from the early start.

Sagt John Underkoffler, der z. B. das UI für Minority Report gebaut hat, in seinem TED-Vortrag.

Das Zeug, das er hier zeigt, soll in fünf Jahren das Standard-Interface für Computer sein. Da bin ich ja mal gespannt. Ich setz mir auf jeden Fall einen Reminder in meinen Kalender…

Android und die Menu-Taste

Das Gegenteil von gut ist gut gemeint.

I’ve been using a Nexus One for a month or so now and there is one singular annoyance that continues to frustrate – the heavy reliance on the Menu button to access critical app functionality. [...]

Turns out, this is a by-product of an evolving operating system for multiple hardware devices. While Android officially requires a touchscreen for Android devices that want to have the ability to install 3rd party apps, there isn’t much that cannot be done by navigating using hard buttons. And, if I’m not mistaken, it wasn’t until Android 2.0 that more softkey functionality was made available. [...]

My reaction to this is, yeah, that makes sense. But, every time I have to tap multiple times to get to something in that Menu area, I find it frustrating.

Windows umschift diese Klippe mit Windows Mobile 7 und legt fest, welche Tasten ein 7er Telefon haben muss.

popover – Apples neues UI-Element

John Gruber beschreibt in seinem Blog ein neues UI-Element des iPads, das sogenannte “popover”.

Across the iPad system, Apple has introduced a new UI element, which they’re calling popovers. It’s a perfect name. Popovers are like a cross between dialog boxes, drop-down menus, and inspector palettes. [...]
They’re in a fixed position, always with an arrow pointing to the button or other control [...] that the user tapped to open the popover. To close a popover, you just tap away from it — tapping anywhere other than within the popover closes it. [...]

According to the iPad Human Interface Guidelines (which, alas, are only available to registered iPhone SDK developers), there is a modal variant: [...]

Modal, in which case the popover dims the screen area around it and requires an explicit dismissal. This behavior is very similar to that of a modal view, but a popover’s appearance tends to give the experience a lighter weight.

Non-modal, in which case the popover does not dim the screen area around it and people can tap outside its bounds to dismiss it. This behavior makes a non-modal popover seem like another view in the application, not a separate state.

The overall effect of popovers is that you do far less view switching in an iPad app than you do an iPhone app.
